The Kind of Partnership That Carries You Through
My friendship with Bob Ginnan goes back to our days at Standard Register (Taylor Corporation). As CEO, I had the privilege of working closely with Bob, who served as CFO. Our journey was shaped by complex business challenges that demanded trust, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. One of the simplest yet most impactful things we did was transform a small closet between our offices into a makeshift whiteboard space, where we’d sit on the windowsill and tackle the big issues together. It was a small idea that made a world of difference.
After years of planning—knee replacement included—we finally embarked on our 3-mile Dialogue Miles™ walk through the scenic paths of Cox Arboretum in Dayton, OH. As we walked, we reflected on the power of transparency, clear decision-making, and the importance of delivering tough messages with solutions. Through every challenge, our relationship thrived on a shared vision and steadfast belief in our goals, even when the journey was steep.
One story stands out. Around the time I stepped into the CEO role at Standard Register, my father was diagnosed with Dementia. A critical message needed to be delivered to our employees, but Bob was the one who urged me to be with my dad in Maine. While I made the call remotely, he stood in my place and delivered the message in person. For that, I am forever grateful.
Key Lessons from our Journey
Challenges build resilience.
Keep pushing and keep learning.Values matter most in hard moments.
Do not compromise them.Belief in others drives performance.
Talent grows with both challenge and support.Creativity belongs everywhere.
It is not limited to one function.Reflection is required.
Stepping back is not optional.Growth comes through adversity.
Calluses do not have to make you callous.
Bob and I still catch up regularly, our conversations always starting with family updates—plus, of course, his beloved The Ohio State University Buckeyes. Looking back on these experiences reinforces the significance of trust and resilience in leadership. These moments shape us and prepare us for the next steps in our lives.
