Three Miles in Central Park with Grace Nanney on Mentorship and Growth

During my recent trip to NYC, I had the opportunity to walk through Sheep Meadow in Central Park with Grace Nanney for Dialogue Miles™.

Grace was my first niece and she was also my first intern at siY, LLC while studying at Vanderbilt University. She has always been a source of inspiration with her strong perspective and boundless energy. We had a great dialogue that started with ‘Hey, Uncle Joe and What’s Up Grace’ while walking over 3 miles together on a beautiful afternoon.

Here are a few gems from our insightful conversation:

  • What is it about being a DJ that brings you joy?
→ Having a passion outside of work has allowed me to not only release stress and focus more during the day, but it has also taught me a lot about human connection, which is so important in business.

  • We have a relationship that is both family and mentorship. What’s your view on mentorship?
→ Mentorship is all about taking the time to think about others and share knowledge. It is invaluable, especially early in your career. It’s the best way to learn from those who have been successful, and it’s hard to find without intention. We are lucky that our family connection has allowed us to grow together and learn from one another.

  • What do you think about learning in a virtual work environment?
→ It’s easy for younger employees to get lost in development when they’re not around experienced people. Virtual work can lead to snap judgments about work ethic or engagement. I’m fortunate to have people around me who care about me as a person, not just the work. Balancing business learning with emotional and personal development is a real positive.

I’m excited to see where Grace’s journey as an Investor Relations Associate at S3 Capital in NYC will take her. We’re already planning our next walk during the family Turkey Trot in Nashville this Thanksgiving!
