A Meaningful Conversation About Growth and Connection

Recently, I had the privilege of a 3-mile Dialogue Miles™ walk at McCabe Greenway with John Arnold.

We first met through Catherine Street, CFA, CPA at Hyde Park Capital, and our earlier lunch made it clear we needed more time to talk. During our walk, we spoke about family, purpose, leadership, and how our personal seasons shape the way we show up.

Here’s what I learned & why it mattered

  • Create space for others to excel. Growth happens when we remove barriers and let people lead, not when we focus on titles.

  • Life experiences shape how we give back. John shared how cancer touched his family and fuels his commitment to American Cancer Society and Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee. A reminder that service often comes from deeply personal places.

  • Trust first, business second. Even with clear commercial alignment, the real starting point is shared values and genuine connection.

  • Stay adaptable. Past success doesn’t replace the need for experimenting, learning, and trying new ideas.

John’s takeaways meant a lot to me:

  • How interconnected our networks truly are

  • The importance of elevating insight—not just repeating noise

  • The “plus one” concept around helping others grow

  • His five filters for evaluating opportunities: strategic work, family flexibility, culture, community impact, and lifestyle

  • Leading with empathy and meeting people where they are

What stayed with me most is that the best conversations often create more than clarity. They create momentum, trust, and a stronger sense of what matters.

We’re planning to continue the dialogue—maybe on the golf course next time—and explore ways to collaborate around shared values.

Grateful for the miles, John.
