Where Conversations Resume Without Reset

Tom Gaudreau and I first met when I needed a haircut after moving to the Gulch. He had just opened Pioneer Gentlemen’s Barber around the corner. What started as a great experience in the chair turned into something more. We kept finding ourselves in conversations about entrepreneurship, service, and even the safety and health world.

Then the shop closed during COVID. Life moved on. Our calendars never quite lined up.

Five years later, on a perfect spring afternoon, we finally made it happen again.

This Dialogue Miles™walk took us through Franklin near Lockwood Glen. About four miles, great weather, and Charlie (Tom’s dog) joining us on the trail. It felt like picking up right where we left off.

A Few Things That Stayed with Me

  • Life partners affect more than we realize early on.
We both talked about meeting our wives and how much that changed the direction of everything that followed.

  • Loss reveals the strength of people around you.
Tom shared the story of losing his dog Jake in a sudden accident near his neighborhood. What stood out most was how people showed up for him afterward.

  • The small moments stay with you.
Watching his son Larry get off the school bus, happy to see his dad and dog - is there anything better? Then the handshake, eye contact, pride. That sticks with you.

  • Talent rarely stays in one lane.
Meeting Tom's wife Renee - a singer, dancer, voiceover artist, and now the inventor of The Dance Dolly - is a reminder of how often people are doing more than one thing well. Never schedule another meeting if you're about to meet someone that interesting!

  • Common ground is usually there.
We realized we’d worked in the same industry and knew several of the same people. It surfaced because we kept asking questions.

  • Entrepreneurship creates a shared language.
Passion, reinvention, risk. It cuts through small talk fast.

We have part 2 of our walk planned closer to Nashville.

What’s a conversation you’ve been meaning to have but haven’t scheduled yet?
