What You Say vs. What They Hear

As leaders, our words carry weight—but it’s not just what we say, it’s how and when we say it.

This week, we reflect on the power of perception and timing in shaping the impact of our communication.

Three Key Themes

1. Perception Shapes Action

When leaders speak, their intention is only half the story. The audience’s interpretation drives the subsequent actions and behaviors.

Consider:

How might your message be received differently than you intended? Have you ever asked, what did you hear?

2. Timing is a Strategic Tool

Transformative communications should be carefully timed.

Consider:

Is this the right moment for this message—or just the moment I’ve chosen? Is the context right?

3. Delivery Defines Impact

The tone, medium, and context of your delivery can amplify or dilute your message.

Consider:

Is my delivery aligned with the urgency, sensitivity, and expectations related to the message? How might I validate the outcome?

This Week’s Ripple Effect

Action: Motion

This week, before delivering a key message, pause and ask:

  • How will this message be perceived, how can I validate that the message was actually received and ultimately, is now the right time?

  • How Have You Applied This Insight?

  • Share Your Reflection
