A Cross-Border Connection with Claudia Harvey That Started Before We Met

Have you ever questioned why you attend certain events or meetings, wondering if you belong or have time for them in our fast-paced world? And then, unexpectedly, you meet someone who becomes a change-maker in your life.

In 2018, Claudia Harvey and I met at a virtual “Manufacturing Council” meeting, bringing together participants from Canada and the U.S. The U.S. was emphasizing reshoring manufacturing, and the council convened professionals deeply connected to the industry. Our discussions spanned logistics, employee safety, recruiting, tooling, technology, emerging AI, and the importance of location. Our shared goal was to dialogue, network, and offer insights to navigate an evolving landscape in both countries.

Claudia, a business owner, balanced the pros and cons of manufacturing locally versus overseas. I had run multiple global organizations centered around manufacturing, emphasizing employee safety. Despite our different backgrounds, we found common ground in our purpose and a positive mindset aimed at driving constructive change in an uncertain world.

Then COVID hit. Our conversations continued, layered with the complexities of a global shutdown. As leaders, we guided our teams through uncharted territory, and a friendship took root. Fast forward to December 5, 2024, the first time we met in person. It felt as though we had known each other for years, having walked through the fire together and emerged stronger.

What Built the Connection

  • Vulnerability
Raw honesty creates understanding. It allows people to connect beyond roles and responsibilities.

  • Life Happens
When you go deeper in conversation, you find alignment in places you did not expect.

  • Multiple Perspectives
Growth requires exposure to different ways of thinking. That takes both courage and openness.

  • Choices
Our lives are shaped by the decisions we make. Moving forward, even when uncertain, creates momentum.

  • Resilience
Shared challenges strengthen relationships. Especially when met with empathy and consistency.

These reflections are calls to action, reminding us to build deeper connections, engage in honest dialogue, and embrace growth through diverse perspectives.

As global citizens, our relationships can transcend borders, shape industries, and enrich lives. In times of uncertainty, maintaining open communication and fostering strong relationships is crucial. By exchanging ideas, challenging perspectives, and supporting one another, we can navigate complex times together and create lasting, positive change.

We’d love to hear your thoughts! How have connections across borders influenced your perspective or career? How can we ensure dialogue remains open despite uncertainties? Drop a comment below and let’s continue the conversation.

Grateful for the connection, Claudia. And for a friendship that started long before we ever met in person.
