A Friendship That Started as Mentorship with Corey Gibbons

Corey Gibbons and I first met four years ago when a mutual colleague suggested we get to know each other. What started as a mentoring relationship turned into something more. A real friendship, built on shared experiences and mutual respect.

Some of that foundation is simple:

  • Pittsburgh roots

  • A shared appreciation for a good cold draft

  • And the ongoing question: Are you really 65? Are you really 47?

A reflection of something deeper. The desire to stay relevant, curious, and connected as we move through life.

Last week, we walked 4.5 miles together for Dialogue Miles™.

What Stayed with Me

  • Connections often run deeper than expected.
I had worked with Corey’s uncle years ago while leading Sony Chemical Corporation of America.

  • People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.
The answer reveals itself over time, but it takes effort. Empathy is not one-way.

  • Seek out opposing views.
Ask why someone sees things differently. Learning and living go hand in hand.

  • Connection is stronger than disagreement.
I love you more than I hate your views. That is where real understanding begins.

  • Random connections often matter most.
They bring insight, energy, and unexpected depth.

  • Be present.
Cancel the meeting. Have the second beer.

Thanks for the walk and the learning, Corey. Looking forward to the next one.
