Our story keeps expanding

On a boat off the coast of Croatia, I looked around at Holy Cross classmates, lifelong friends, and people I had only recently met.

It got me thinking about how, as we get older, new possibilities open up. Conversations deepen, friendships grow, and gratitude for those who’ve been with us becomes stronger.

Our guide shared stories of medieval art and architecture; we stood on the worn and enduring foundations of a stronghold built to last. The limestone walls around the island have stood against the sea and centuries of change. When you lean against that warm, ancient stone and gaze over the Pelješac Channel, you begin to understand what it means to create something lasting. There’s a unique comfort in feeling stone that has weathered sun, wind, and years, yet remains. These enduring landmarks brought us new experiences and a fresh outlook.

Trips like this remind me that our story keeps expanding, just as the city of Korčula continues to build on its foundations. Every experience and conversation adds to what we’ve already lived. Memories from Croatia bring back Patricia’s walk through Korčula after our injuries, and Joe’s reminder to make time for the next get-together. These moments with old and new friends show that what endures in our relationships draws not just from the past, but from how we keep showing up for each other.

Thinking back on this trip, on Patricia’s strength, Joe’s advice, and all we learned, I see how each chapter of our friendships grows with the time we share and the care we offer. Our stories keep unfolding with every step, each conversation, and every plan for another day together.
