What sustains a leader under real pressure

Leadership isolation is real. When you're driving hard to scale a company, the real work is managing your own internal engine and staying healthy enough to see it through.

On a recent walk and round of golf with Matt Ostrega (CEO of Mereo) and Erik Spring (CRO of Mereo), we talked about what it actually takes to lead under pressure without burning out your people or yourself.

Here is what we kept coming back to:

  1. Stay until the end."Run through first base every time." Persistence doesn't guarantee a win, but giving up early guarantees you'll never create the opportunity.

  2. Roots forge resilience. Blue-collar backgrounds and early environments forge a powerful internal engine. That drive is an asset, but it requires deep self-awareness to manage under high-stakes pressure.

  3. Laughter and intensity can coexist. Pushing hard and building genuine human connection work together. The strongest operators combine both to make the work sustainable over the long haul.

  4. Family at the center. True balance requires clear communication and alignment around the intense, demanding seasons that execution requires.

  5. Health is an investment. Taking care of yourself is a direct operational investment in the teams and families who depend on your energy and presence.

  6. Trust is mutual. In revenue and leadership teams, trust requires consistent performance and transparent communication. You cannot ask for it without demonstrating it first.

Leaders spend most of their time driving results. But the best ones pause to recognize growth in others, express gratitude, and celebrate progress along the way.

As Matt put it: "I may not always get the W, and it may not always be pretty, but with persistence and positive next-shot thoughts, anything is possible."

Compete hard. Appreciate the team. Stay until the end.
