How We Spend Our Time

Spring is here!

The external environment is continuing to be both a source of perspective and distraction. My conversations with friends across the Globe confirm that we need to talk with the broadest group of people possible to ensure that our perspective is balanced. As leaders, we can live in our bubble or move outside of it with intention so that are decisions are grounded with an emphasis on true impact.

Three Key Takeaways:

#1. Embrace the Unexpected

During a recent mentor-mentee meeting, I was reminded of how often we miss the truly important moments. Over my shoulder, Savannah noticed a duck being walked on a leash by his owner. We quickly decided to go meet the duck. His owner introduced us to Diesel and mentioned that Diesel only allows people he trusts or likes to pet him. This encounter was a reminder that kindness and awareness can lead to unique opportunities.

Action: The next time something unexpected happens outside of your scheduled meeting, step away with intention and bring the team with you. The unexpected often turns out to be the greatest teacher!

#2. A Trend or Single Data Point

Many of my interactions of late have been focused on budgeting and forecasting. The level of uncertainty is growing which is leading many customers to kick the can on new projects/investments.

Action: Have your sales teams organize meetings with the most influential customers and discuss how they are forecasting their businesses for the next 3 Quarters?

#3. Bridging the Socialization Gap

While many companies are bringing people back to work, there remains a socialization gap or hangover from the Covid period. Working in the office but still spending time in isolation accomplishes nothing. Creating a process that harnesses the best thinking from the team is a focus for many companies right now. The external pressures, constant sound bites, and lack of clarity create a critical moment for internal communications.

Action: Develop intentional strategies to foster collaboration and communications within your teams. Listening at this time is really important and making people feel that their insights are useful is particularly important.

My Question To You

If you cancelled your meetings for a day, how would you use the time?
