When someone remembers what you said in passing

Recently, I had the privilege of walking with Eucharia Crean. Our backdrop was Dublin’s stunning Herbert Park. Walking the scenic one-mile perimeter, surrounded by mature trees and the historic bandstand, Eucharia shared how these grounds once hosted the grand 1907 World Fair. It was the perfect setting for a deep, strategic conversation about history, family, and the future.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate about Eucharia is how closely she listens.

On an earlier visit to Dublin, I had mentioned in passing that I wanted to stop at a Catholic church and light a candle in memory of my family. Without making a big deal of it, Eucharia remembered. She intentionally built that stop into our morning route.

We lit candles, reflected on our families, and discussed how faith and purpose evolve. As we walked back through the park, that simple act of intentionality underscored three core leadership truths:

  1. Active listening is the root of trust. While baseline reliability (like Eucharia’s impeccable punctuality) earns you a seat at the table, durable trust is forged when people feel truly heard. For leaders, the ability to recall a stakeholder’s personal priorities or unstated concerns transforms a professional connection into a foundation of psychological safety and genuine loyalty.

  2. Leadership is a generational relay. Succession asks a difficult question of any founder or CEO: have you built something that can keep growing in someone else’s hands? Stewardship means respecting what came before while giving the next generation room to make it their own.

  3. Presence is our greatest currency. We can delegate operations, tasks, and even strategy, but we cannot delegate presence. The influence we have on our executive teams, our rising talent, and our families isn't built through fleeting advice or directives. It’s built through undivided attention. For a leader, time is the most fiercely guarded resource. When we invest it intentionally, we create alignment, confidence, and core values that will outlast our own tenure.

This is the exact philosophy behind Dialogue Miles. When we step out of the boardroom and walk shoulder-to-shoulder, defenses drop, and genuine connection begins.

Thank you, Eucharia, for the miles and the remarkable conversation.
