How age matters far less than perspective

Rachel Schneider and I first crossed paths at a private equity conference. A casual "hello" led to a deep conversation about her healthcare packaging business, which eventually blossomed into a trusted friendship.

Years later, as she navigated the complex and often deeply emotional sale of her company, I was honored to serve as her sounding board. In a process where founders can easily lose their way amidst term sheets and negotiations, my goal was simply to help her stay anchored to her original intent and values while completing the transaction.

Today, we reconnected post-sale, swapping the boardroom for the trails at Radnor Lake. The power of nature was on full display. Surrounded by smiling hikers, scattered driftwood, and signs for the bald eagle habitat (even catching a glimpse of a beaver and a striking blue and green heron) it was the perfect setting to pause and reflect on the reality of life after the exit.

As we walked, Rachel shared her new leadership role with. Hearing her describe this chapter reinforced for me that a leader’s most valuable asset is the perspective they offer others on their growth journeys.

As we walked, Rachel shared her new role as a Council leader with
C200, a peer community. Hearing her describe this chapter reinforced for me that a leader’s most valuable asset is the perspective they offer others on their growth journeys.

Our conversation left me reflecting on a few core leadership and life lessons:

Curiosity creates opportunity: You never know where a relationship will lead. The return on investment of a simple introduction is often impossible to predict.

Honest feedback is a gift: Trust grows when leaders receive genuine truth rather than convenient answers.

Time reveals its purpose: Life frequently redirects our schedules toward family and personal priorities. Sometimes, time's greatest value is only understood in hindsight.

Relationships don't need an agenda: Simply being available as a resource creates a foundation that outlasts any business deal.

Rachel and I come from  different generations, but our walk proved that age matters far less than perspective. When we share our distinct life and business experiences, everyone grows.

Supporting Rachel during this pivotal chapter reaffirmed exactly why I built siY: to create a safe space for leaders, help them focus on what matters most, and support transformations that truly impact their lives.

I'd love to hear from you in the comments: What relationship in your life began with a simple conversation but became far more meaningful than you ever expected?
