Four Equations for Life from a Walk with Todd Duplain

A few weeks ago, Todd Duplain texted me about meeting up for coffee. I happened to be in Dayton, where he lives, so we made it happen, 2.5 Dialogue Miles™ from my hotel. Todd always starts our connection with an offer, in this case, a coffee and an inquiry, how is your family and how are you. I am such a fan of genuine people who lean in to hear the response to a question as it makes you feel important. That simple lesson can help us in our careers and in any relationship.

Ghostlight Coffee South Park was closing so we took a walk in the historic neighborhood focusing on our families, helping our communities, and ensuring that we stay in touch.

After the walk, Todd brilliantly captured our conversation and takeaways from our meeting as four math equations.

Reflections from the Walk

  1. Connection = Time Spent + Shared Interest + History
Connection is built intentionally. When these elements come together, relationships deepen naturally.

  2. Commonality > Divisiveness
We met the day after the Presidential Election. Despite differences, we have more in common than what separates us.

  3. Retirement = Freedom + Purpose
The next stage of life is not about slowing down. It is about creating something meaningful in a different way.

  4. Energy = People + Routines + Environment
Energy is not random. It is built through the people you spend time with, the habits you create, and the environments you choose.

One other thing, did you know that Cheez-Its were invented in Dayton, Ohio? The Green & Green Company, founded by Weston Green, introduced Cheez-It crackers in 1921. The company marketed them as a "baked rarebit," a reference to a dish of melted cheese over toast.

What is your go-to snack on the road after a long day/week?
